‘People have asked me whether we acknowledge
Rabindranath’s paintings as part of our Bengal School
of Art. My answer is... In Rabindranath’s art we may
discern all the essential developments of great art;
and, in particular, that great quality of freshness and
vigour which makes the old new… He is of Bengal, and
though in this as in other respects, he has given more
than he has taken, and inspired more than he has
shared, – for such is the mark of all genius – that very
genius cannot be taken to disentitle us from claiming
him as our own.’
