A Beautiful Day
Rays of warm sunshine leaked into Yara’s room. She woke up strangely, small tears streamed
down from her eyes. She was feeling a mix of melancholy and confusion. ”That was odd” Yara
thought to herself. As she sat up on her bed, her little 3 year old brother, Amir, creaked her
bedroom door open with a smile. She was surprised to see him awake so early in the morning.
He ran clumsily over to her and hugged his sister. Noticing that she was a little sad, Amir gave
her sister an extra peck on the cheek and smiled gleefully. “Thank you Amir, I love you so much”
she replied. She perked up instantly, and was certain that the rest of her day would be amazing.
Yara was in grade 11 this year, she was halfway through her semester and had kept a pretty
good track record. Almost perfect attendance, punctual submissions of her homework and she
aced every test or exam that had come her way. She was trying to impress her small family of 4,
especially her father, which she adored most. Ever since she was only a few months old, Yara
had always been close to her dad, Yassin. She would begin bawling whenever Yassin had to go
to work and ever so lovingly, Yassin would always relent and stayed home that day.
“Yara, your dad is waiting for you in the car, come and grab some breakfast first and go to him
quickly” Yara’s mom, Amina, yelled from the kitchen downstairs.
“Yes, mama,” Yara replied quickly. She hastily but carefully climbed down the staircase with her
backpack in hand. Clumsily putting on her white socks and school shoes, she was heading
straight for the car.
Amina was busy preparing lunch boxes for both Yara and her husband. She grinned at the sight
of the neatly arranged olive oil and Za’atar with bread. She also packed an extra egg mayo
sandwich for each of them just to be safe.
Over the radio, an announcement was made about some evacuation that is happening on the
south of the border. Amina grimaced at the bad news and immediately switched the radio to
some music instead. She perked up and did a little dance before resuming her duties.
“Don’t forget your lunch boxes” Amina yelled. “Yes, mama,” Yara replied again. Yara was
unapologetically obedient to her mom. Her mom and dad were complete opposites of one
another. While her dad was the loving and always doting one amongst them, her mom however,
was strict and was the so-called “ruler” of the family. However, she still loved her mom due to
her amazing cooking skills and her melodic lullabies that never fails to put her to sleep.
“Baba!” she exclaimed at the sight of her dad sitting in the car. “Yara! How is my cute baby girl
doing today? Have you had your breakfast yet darling?” he questioned with a smile that could
spread from ear to ear. “Yes baba, mama made a wonderful breakfast for me and Amir. She
also made me and you this” she motioned to the lunchboxes that she was carrying in a plastic
bag. “Mashallah, that smells so good. I might have to take your share of the lunch” he joked.
