P. 2
The dynamic duo were having a blast in the car as they made their way to school. This was truly
why Yara was excited to go to school everyday. She loved hanging out and spending time with
her old man. Her father was always busy with work and the little time he had, he spent it with his
family. Such an admirable father figure. Yara daydreamed of getting married to someone that
could match up to her father one day. Nonetheless, she was still too young for those lofty
aspirations. For now, school should be her focus.
“Yara~” her father sang her name jokingly, immediately snapping her back from her daydream.
“You have arrived my princess, I will pick you up later after school, okay?” he assured her. “Yes
baba” she replied as she climbed out of her father’s car. As soon as she walked a few steps
towards the school doors, she heard her father call out to her.
“Yara!” he exclaimed. Yara turned quickly in his direction. This was indeed the beginning of a
sort morning ritual that they had between one another. Yassin pulled out an arrow from an
imaginary quiver strapped to his back. He pulls back the imaginary arrow with a loving smile and
releases it with a gasp. Yara caught the arrow with her hand and pulled out a finger-heart in
return. They both beamed at each other. As Yara walked away into school, Yassin began to
rethink about all the happiest and proudest moments of his life. His daughter was indeed the
epitome of his happiness.
Yara was happy when she saw her friends sitting in class. She was too ecstatic in fact. It felt
strangely compressing. Her breath was beginning to shallow and her nostrils were invaded with
the stench of dust and debris around her. She didn’t notice it but she was pinned to the ground
with something massively heavy. She had been struggling to free herself from it, but every
movement would cause stinging pains all over her body. A crimson iron-like liquid was beginning
to drench her head too. She could only muster a few groans as her throat had given out from
screaming for help. She remembers now. Every detail before being plunged into this hellscape.
A loud crash and a blinding light had enveloped the entire school. The friends that she
witnessed disappeared in an instant. A sudden concussive force knocked her back into the
school’s courtyard and the multi-floored compound was instantly leveled into the ground. She
was amongst the unlucky ones, being trapped but still breathing. Her friends died instantly, she
was certain of it.
It had already been days. She could barely make out a few of her friends' corpses. She was
confused at first, but came to the realization that she was experiencing the last vivid moments of
her life. As her body begins to give up on sustaining life, she is forced to retrace her memories,
unfolding like delicate petals in twilight. That day’s morning was the perfect morning. Her sweet
little brother’s embrace, her beautiful mother’s little dance that she caught before heading to the
car, and her dad. Oh, how she wished to see her dad one last time. To tell him that she loved
him too much to bear the sadness that he will experience in her passing. She wonders where
and how her family was. Everything was fading to black, she felt a sudden rush of warmth.
“It’s okay baba.” she stammered as tears rolled down her cheeks. “I am all okay now.”
