if not the best when it works. And since it takes a long time to raise kids—say about 25 years for two kids— then you might as well swear to stay together the rest of the 25 to 40 years of your life. The bonds formed from true romance and gratifying child rearing are immense. Probably enough to get many through another 25 to 40 years with stable or ever-increasing love.
However, I’m not addressing the joys and heartbreaks of raising children in this book. I have little experience with children as I’ve had none myself. I have helped raise a few in a peripheral capacity. For how freethinking applies to children please see the hundreds of other books on the subject.
No, this book is addressed to those who have either never had kids, or whose kids are grown and mostly gone, and who are now contemplating, or are in a romantic connection or marriage, with another adult.
4. Finances:
Just as it took two to look after a prehistorical child, it often takes two to navigate today’s financial world with any dexterity. It’s been amazing how single mothers and fathers have done this. But also singles without kids have been able to arrange a financially successful life.
