On the other hand, does Obama’s blackness create a shadow causing us to overlook the lack of progress? In many ways it seems so as we casually
kill tens of thousands more in the Middle East, and rampaging Wall Street soaks up more trillions. As freethinking liberals we can change our minds about Obama every second, venerating or hating depending on our whims.
Much greater happiness and effectiveness may be only a few freethinking thoughts away. Or they may not. But such ambiguity shouldn’t flummox freethinking liberals. Our very essence includes living bravely with uncertainty about many of life’s biggest questions.
