was killed on the first day of Gettysburg. Shot in the “breast,”an eye witness said his last words were “Oh Lordy.” “I thought a heap of Branyon,” he wrote.

The South had lost many of its ablest men and property, destroyed and overrun by Carpetbaggers and Scalawags. Times were hard and money scarce... About the only books available were the Bible, Pilgrims Progress, Josephus’ History of the Jews, Peter Parley’s History of the World and a few others... My father took the Louisville Courier-Journal, edited by the famous Henry Watterson, for whom I was named.
Watterson wrote two books and had two biographies written about him. One biography was named Henry Watterson, Reconstructed Rebel, (1956) and one of his own books was called The Compromises of Life (1902). In 1876 Waterson publically demanded that hundreds of thousands of Democrats march on Washington to try to force the election of the Democrat, Tilden.
