high school band. I never developed a knack for them but my sister Mary Nell, became a good pianist. Mary Nell was born in 1926, and we got along well. She went her way and I went mine. We both made the National Honor Society and both went to the University of Alabama.
Daddy on music:
A quartet singing plantation melodies caused a man to burst into tears. After- wards the director said: “Our quartet appreciates the compliment you paid by your display of emotions. You’re a South- erner no doubt.” “No,” sobbed the man, “I’m a musician.”
Once Dad was applying for a teacher’s job and an interviewer asked: “Are you going to teach that the earth is flat or round?” Dad needed the job and said: “I’m prepared to teach it either way.” That sounds far out but the world was superstitious back then. In his joke book was this approach:
“Is the world round?” the teacher asked the little boy. “Nome.”“Is the world flat?” she asked. “Nome.”“Well, what is it?” “Pappy says the world’s crooked.”
