Mom was very quiet, charming, and conservative. She supported us pretty much in whatever we did. Sometimes pretty student teachers from Montevallo and elsewhere would stay in the rooms above our apartment. Mom would let them use one of our rooms to enter- tain men.
“Mother, when I grow up and get married will I have a husband like father?”
“I don’t know dear,” said mother, “very probably.”
“If I grow up and don’t get married will I be an old maid like Aunt Mary?” “Perhaps.”
The daughter sighed: “It’s a tough world for women, ain’t it?”
