Elation in the Great Depression
It was the Great Depression and, even though we knew little about it, in retrospect I can see that we experienced some of the de- pressing events of those days. We depended largely on gardening and vegetables for our staples. We’d buy tin cans from Sears and Roe- buck, build a fire under the cans, pump the air out with a sealer mechanism, and seal them with a solder. We’d hear cans spewing on the back porch all winter and Dad said never eat from any spewed cans. Little did I know that those cans contained botulism which is cited today as one of the weapons of mass destruc- tion, a WMD.
After harvesting we’d bury sweet and Irish potatoes so they wouldn’t freeze, and dig
