below. The going was rough and the plane swayed from one side to the other. Since this was my first plane ride it didn’t bother me as I thought this was the nor- mal procedure.
On that flight the pilot had to make an emergency landing in Mobile. The passengers talked about how badly frightened they were but Daddy “was the only one who was not scared due to my ignorance of flying.” We finally
got to Houston, but on the way back a woman went into labor and the pilot got me to examine her. He decided to make another emergency landing in Montgomery to take the lady to the hospital. Daddy took it all in stride.

Before you go thinking I was a Huckle-
berry Finn, remember that I was very well behaved within the boundaries of my freedom. Dad smoked a pipe, but said he’d give me a watch if I made it through high school without smoking. I did and got the watch honestly. Dad only allowed smoking in the outhouses in high school. This minimized its use since you had to endure quite a stink to smoke.
However, I did start smoking cigarettes
