Low in dollars but high on the Alabama hog
My family was my first stroke of good luck. Dad was a teacher, school principal, county superintendent and politician. Some- times it seemed like he had the wisdom of Solomon. This comes out in a book of jokes he collected, People Are Funny, 630 Favorite Jokes, written partly to help with his many speeches. His advice on speaking: “Stand up, speak up, then shut up.”
I was born in Albertville, Alabama, May 25, 1923, while Daddy taught high school there, and was christened Edgar Watterson Branyon. “Silent” Cal Coolidge was President. Dad’s joke about that President was:
