Reporter: “Do you wish to say anything about Prohibition President Coolidge?” “No,” said the President. “About the Farm Bloc?” “No.” “About the World Court?” “No.” The reporter started to leave. “By the way,” Coolidge yelled. “Don’t quote me on that.”
The country was just erupting into a free-wheeling era known as the Roaring Twen- ties. We weren’t roaring much in Alabama and didn’t even hear the roar in Albertville. It was located in an area known as Sand Mountain, Alabama, one of the poorest areas, in one of the poorest states in the nation. But it also had sandy soil adjacent to the Tennessee Valley, and was good for farming. We didn’t know we were deprived.
Stylish city women of the ‘20s were called flappers. One of Daddy’s takes on this was:
