Physical Education Course Specification
OCR GCSE – J587
Course Content and Examinations
The theory units will have a 60% weighting, practical coursework activities (made up of three different activities) make up the remaining 40% of the course.
GCSE (9–1) specifications in physical education will equip learners with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to develop and maintain their performance in physical activities and understand the benefits to health, fitness and well- being. This will require them to:
• Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance.
• Understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport.
• Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas.
• Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport.
• Understand the contribution which physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and well-being.
• Understand key socio-cultural influences which can affect people’s involvement in physical activity and sport.

60 Marks | 1 hour written paper | 30% of total
Socio-cultural influences
Sports psychology/health, fitness and wellbeing / Socio- cultural issues and sports psychology (02)

Practical activity assessment
Evaluating and Analysing Performance (AEP) Performance in physical education (03)
80 Marks | Non-exam assessment (NEA) | 40% of total
The practical element of the course Performance in physical education (03) requires students to be assessed in their performance in three activities taken from two approved lists:
• One activity from the ‘Individual’ list
• One activity from the ‘Team’ list
• One other activity from either the ‘Individual’ or the ‘Team’ list
Candidates are required to have an aptitude, as well as a passion for sport.
Can I study this subject at A Level if I have not studied it at GCSE?
Yes, however the GCSE course does provide very useful background knowledge leading into the A Level course.
