NGV Essentials and Safety Practices
Background Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are very different from those powered by liquid fuels
because natural gas is a gas. Fuel is stored onboard these vehicles in either
compressed or liquefied form.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles store fuel at extremely high pressures and,
although these vehicles are manufactured to extremely stringent safety standards,
technicians working on or around natural gas vehicles must be familiar with the safety
hazards and common safety practices to be used.
Purpose of Training To provide the necessary safety and technical information for technicians and fleet
operations personnel to safely work on or around compressed natural gas-powered
vehicles.
Target Population Heavy- and light-duty fleet and dealership vehicle technicians, maintenance
supervisors, fleet managers and other related team members responsible for
performing CNG and vehicle maintenance.
Course Objectives Explain the properties and characteristics of natural gas
Compare natural gas, gasoline, and diesel fuels
Recognize all major low- and high-pressure CNG fuel system components; describe
their operation and safety features
Describe the differences between dedicated, bi-fuel, and dual-fuel NGVs
Employ safety precautions and techniques when servicing natural gas-powered
vehicles
Understand CNG fueling station equipment, safety devices, operation and fueling
procedures
Identify CNG defueling methods and the related safety precautions
