After becoming the senior pastor at First Baptist Church Villa Rica in September 2013, I had the desire to pastor a church that was alive and making a difference in our community. The culture in the church had to be contagious about serving God and reaching people. I prayed for God to position me in such a way that I could make a difference.
Over the past seven years, we’ve created a culture that wants to be on mission for God. More people now go on foreign mission trips than we had in service the first day I preached in the church! FBC Villa Rica has seen over 1,000 people baptized. We’ve also planted churches across the U.S., as well as in Guatemala. It has been a simple plan: Obey God’s Word and follow His plan that was spoken by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20.
I’ve been asked numerous times, “What do you want to see happen during your time as president?” I would love to see what has happened at my church be the same for as many churches as possible. In working closely with Thomas Hammond, our GBMB executive director, I would like to see many churches get actively involved in evangelism and missions.
We as Georgia Baptists need to engage our people in going, and that will cause the growing! The best form of discipleship is to take people on a journey to do the work that Jesus laid out for us to do. We should educate people about the importance of missions while taking them to the field, locally and abroad.
I am so happy to be the president of this great state and hope I can help churches thrive for the Kingdom! My challenge to pastors and key leaders across our state is to get involved in missions, locally and internationally. This will help create an environment in local churches that will help congregations grow spiritually and, in many cases, numerically. It is the ultimate form of discipleship that encourages people to obey the Word, worship God, love people and share the gospel.
If we accomplish this, I believe we will fulfill the Great Commission that Jesus gave us and the impact on our state will be amazing.
