Conclusion
We hope you will appreciate what
reservoirs of information historic
graveyards such as Preban can hold.
Our efforts to recover the graveyard
from years of neglect illustrate the
potential history and archaeology
which lies dormant in our graveyard
and which can be uncovered using
best practice methods as outlined in
the 2014 film.
Although this is one graveyard it
tells the story of so many historic
graveyards throughout the country.
These sites are important historic
landmarks which enable us to
understand our history and culture.
We hope at Preban to have garnered
as much information as possible
from the headstones, sculptors and

modern times. There are numerous
historic graveyards suffering neglect
and we hope that our efforts will
highlight the value and importance
of maintaining such sites. People
worldwide who trace their ancestors
to Preban have for the first-time
access to an online record where
they can search for their graves
and perhaps one day visit them.
Graveyards can also provide a spin off
for local tourism but only if accessible
and documented. At Preban we hope
we have highlighted how crucial
it is to protect, understand and
disseminate the information held in
these historic sites. In 2017 a beautiful altar was built in the graveyard by local stone masons Tony Buttle and Jimmy
Cullen with the assistance of Joe Kelly, Pat Kennedy and Eddie Whitty. It is dedicated to Barbara
(Shinners) Grainger.
