growth factor
In an exponential function, the output is multiplied by the same factor every time the input increases by one. The multiplier is called the growth factor.
growth rate
In an exponential function, the growth rate is the fraction or percentage of the output that gets added every time the input is increased by one. If the growth rate is 20% or 0.2, then the growth factor is 1.2.
horizontal asymptote
The line is a horizontal asymptote of a function if the outputs of the function get closer and closer to as the inputs get larger and larger in either the positive or negative direction. This means the graph gets closer and closer to the line as you move to the right or left along the -axis.
identity
An equation which is true for all values of the variables in it.
imaginary number
A number on the imaginary number line. It can be written as , where is a real number and .
integer
A whole number (including 0) or its opposite.
logarithm
The logarithm to base 10 of a number , written , is the exponent you raise 10 to get , so it is the number that makes the equation true. Logarithms to other bases are deSned the same way with 10 replaced by the base, e.g. is the number that makes the equation true. The logarithm to the base is called the natural logarithm, and is written .
logarithmic function
A logarithmic function is a constant multiple of a logarithm to some base, so it is a function given by where is any number and is a positive number (10, 2, or in this course).
