• Direct udents’ attention to page 5 of their O to Class notebook.
• Remind udentsthatone rategywritersuseistotake notes about what they read. In ead of writing full sentences, udents will draw and write a few words to help them remember what was read.
• Have udentsputtheir ngersontheProblemboxoftheir O to Class Note-catcher: “Out of the Rubble” on page 5 in the O to Class notebook.
• Ask:“Whatistheproblem?WhyisithardforchildreninPort- au-Prince, Haiti, to go to school?” (earthquake, schools knocked down)
• Onadocumentcamera,askforinputfromtheclassto ll out the Problem box of the note-catcher using pictures and labels.
• Invite udentstoThink-Pair-Share:
“What notes will you add to the Problem box on your note-catcher?”
• Invite udentstocompletetheboxontheirown note-catchers.
• Circulate to support udents and encourage them
to provide as much speci c detail from the text as possible and to use the How to Take Notes anchor chart as necessary.
