• Ask:“Who is this sentence about?” (the children in Xixuaú, Brazil.)
• Display and read aloud the following chunk: could access Brazil’s online learning program,
• Ask:“WhatcouldthechildrenofXixuaúdoaftertheyhadsolarpanelsintheir village?” (they could use the Internet to learn and take classes.)
“Can you  nd some verbs or action words that tell you this is a sentence about a solution? What do the words mean?” (could, access, learning; responses will vary)
“Think about the children in ‘Out of the Rubble.’ How could you use a sentence about their solution  arting with ‘They could’?” (They could go to class in tents. They could play games and sing songs.)
• Students can act out some of the verbs from the sentence and others can guess which verbs they are acting out.
• Displaythefollowingchunk:whichgivesthemthechancetogetahighschool education
• Ask:“What problem did being able to use Brazil’s online learning
program solve in the community?” (It let them get a high school educa- tion.)
“What does the phrase ‘gives them the chance’ mean?
(lets them do something they couldn’t do before; helps them)
“Think about the children in ‘Out of the Rubble.’ How could you write about their solution using the phrase ‘gives them the chance to’?” (gives them the chance to learn after the earthquake)

“Can you say more about that?” (Responses will vary.)
• Studentscansharehowtheywouldfeeliftheydidn’thavethechancetoget a high school education and then share how they would feel if they had the chance to get a high school education. Students can act out these feelings.

• Ask:“What does this chunk tell us?” (The children in Xixuaú did not have to
leave their village to get an education.)
“The children in Haiti were able to go to school in tents. So what was something they did not have to do?” (They did not have to miss too much school. They did not have to build brand-new schools. They did not have to leave the island.
