Assessment Overview and Resources
Informative Writing Assessment:
1. Review student responses on the reading portion of the assessment before guiding students through completing the writing portion.
2. Ensure access to the following materials for this portion of the assessment: O  to Class note- book, Parts of a Problem and Solution Informative Paragraph anchor chart, and Problem and Solution Informative Writing Model: “The Rainforest School.”
3. In Session 5, review the writing prompt with students:
“In Chalanbeel region, Bangladesh, it can be hard to go to school. How did the commu- nity in Chalanbeel region, Bangladesh solve this problem so children can go to school? Describe the problem and solution in Chalanbeel region, Bangladesh using details from the text O  to Class.”
4. Tell students that today they will start writing a problem and solution informative paragraph by writing their focusing statement and describing the problem.
5. Model this using the Problem and Solution Informative Writing Model: “The Rainfor- est School.”
6. Invite students to begin writing their focus statement and describing the problem.
7. Circulate to support students by reviewing the writing prompt as needed and reminding them to use their own notes on page 8 in their research notebook.
8. Explain to students that they will complete the rest of their informative paragraph in the next lesson.
9. In Session 6, review the writing prompt with students:
“In Chalanbeel region, Bangladesh, it can be hard to go to school. How did the commu- nity in Chalanbeel region, Bangladesh solve this problem so children can go to school? Describe the problem and solution in Chalanbeel region, Bangladesh using details from the text O  to Class.”
10. Tell students that today they will  nish writing their problem and solution informative par- agraphs by describing the solution and writing their conclusion.
11. Model this using the Problem and Solution Informative Writing Model: “The Rainforest School.”
12. Invite students to continue writing their informative paragraphs.
13. Circulate to support students by reviewing the writing prompt as needed and reminding them to use their own notes on page 8 in their research notebook.
14. Collect students’ informative paragraphs. Use the Unit 2 Informative/Explanatory Writ- ing Rubric and the sample pro cient response to evaluate their progress.
