• Introducethebookbyshowingitto udentsandreadingthe title and author: The Invisible Boy by
Trudy Ludwig.
• Invite udentstolookcloselyatthecover.Ask:
“What do you notice on the cover of this book?” (I see a boy who is drawing with chalk.)
• Draw udents’attentiontothenamesonthecoverifthey have not already mentioned it.
• PointtoTrudyLudwig’snameandtell udentssheisthe author. Ask:
“What does the author do?” (writes the text in the book)
“What does the illu rator do?” (draws the pictures)
• Say:“Todaywearegoingtoreadanewbook,andinityouare going to meet a boy named Brian. Brian is the main char- acter of this  ction  ory.”
• Ask:“What does it mean if the book is  ction?”
(The  ory came from the author’s imagination.)
• Invite udentstoThink-Pair-Share:
“What do you think might happen in this  ory?” (Re- sponses will vary.)
• Donotcon rmorcorrect udents’responses.Simplylet their predictions linger. It is important that they get to hear the text read aloud before you do any
explaining.
