Which Man am I?

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” Matthew 7: 24-29 NIV
I read this passage recently and found myself asking this question, am I a foolish man? If I try and look at these verses in light of my own life I try to imagine
myself sitting there on a rock beside Jesus hearing him for the first time. I probably don't realize that I have just finished hearing him give perhaps the most convicting message of all time. Now, hearing his final sentences of his ministry, I am hearing him talk about two men building their houses on rock and sand. My mind goes to the question, which man am I?
In my panic then, just as it is now, I see examples of the man who built his house on sand in my life. It’s ironic that I have access today to the written word and to unbelievable amounts of commentary, versions of the Bible, professors, and teachers. Yet I am as dumbfounded today as I would have been had I been sitting next to Him then. Why is that? Why do I see examples of the foolish man in my life today?
