What you need to know about your child’s BMI
Body mass index (BMI) is an easy way to measure body fat. It also helps doctors see if a person’s weight could lead to health issues in the future.
The BMI for children and teens is measured based on their gender, age, height, and weight. Using charts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, doctors can compare BMI levels with other children at the same development stage.
Children who are obese are at risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, joint problems, and other health issues. Keeping your child’s BMI in the healthy range is important for their overall health and well-being.
Your child’s doctor can help you
develop good habits at home. Here are some ways you can help your child stay at a healthy weight:
• Focus on a proper balance of
healthy foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low- or nonfat dairy products, nondairy products, and lean meats, poultry, fish, soy, nuts, and beans for protein.
• Limit high-calorie foods, such as sugary drinks and salty snacks.
• Offer plenty of water.
• Find time for exercise.Talk with
your child’s doctor for the best
exercise plan.
• Reduce TV and video game time
to no more than two hours per day. • Make sure your child gets plenty
of sleep.
