Did you know that several of your fellow Club at WestPark residents play in the
Sun City Roseville Senior Softball League?
You are invited to come out to watch regular season and playoff games from the
safety of your lawn chair. Games are played at 9am on Mondays and Wednesdays
on the two fields at Mahany Park (near Mahany Library). Games typically last two
th
th
hours, but a tie at the end of the 7 inning means an 8 inning is played.
A few years ago, Sun City opened their league to non-Sun City residents. Players
must be at least 55 years old (60 if non Sun City Resident), and some players are
in their mid-80s!
This year, Sun City established five teams of 11-12 players each. Because of
COVID-19, practice started in late March and a player draft was held by the team
managers and coaches. Games began in mid-April and the season will continue
th
through mid-July. The league will hold an ‘end-of-season’ banquet on July 14 .
Senior softball games look a lot like Professional Baseball games but with some important rules to ensure we have fun safely. Some of these
rules are:
• It’s ‘slow pitch’, but the softball isn’t ‘soft’- and some players can hit the ball over 250ft, off the
outfield fence. So pitchers use a mask and pitching screen.
th
• 7 inning games, with runs capped at five per team per inning for the first six innings, and a 7
‘open inning’ that allows teams to gain unlimited runs.
• ‘No contact’ at bases that allows runners to ‘run through’ the base, but to the side.
• 10 players on the field, with four in the outfield instead of three.
• Trained umpires behind the home plate and on the field to make the calls
• A scorer who keeps score, stats and runs the scoreboard.
Schedules, standings, rules and other helpful information is found on the League’s website,
