S2 experiment
with sonnet form
Having studied Shakespearean sonnets in S2
English, pupils tried their hand at writing modern
poems, but keeping to the strict structure of the
sonnet form. Two poems are reproduced below.
Martha Yorston (P2)
Free
Whenever I look up at the vast sky,
I wonder what the world is like to you.
See what cannot be seen by the human’s eye
Freely in your endless domain of blue. Mrs Bleakley wonders if S1 mathematicians will
Why can I not spread my wonderful wing notice they have a new teacher
And go and explore the world above cloud?
I wish I could perch on a twig and sing,
Sing my favourite song in the woods out loud.
Just imagine if I had no homework
And I did not have to pay for my food Olivia Arthur (P2)
No need to go and get a knife and fork
Just fly and sing around the quiet wood.
But the bird just flew away and left me
Oblivious to my wish to be free.
Ryo Wilson (S2)
The Great Wall
Man, this journey is taking a long time.
I sit in the car, unable to wait.
I must see you during my short lifetime,
My eyes craving for the view on its plate.
Thousands of people wandering around, Darcie Liddle (P4) in response to a Junior School
assembly on kindness and gratitude
While you coil round the mountains like a snake.
You shine brightly and loom over the ground,
Showing off your tough bricks without a break.
When the sun comes down and the moon comes
up,
Little oil lamps come dotting everywhere.
Even the night cannot gobble you up,
Your calm presence even affects the air.
This sight was one that will never leave me,
My plain imagination has been freed.
The Rights Respecting Schools message is conveyed via Alex Faraday (P3) on Easter Craiglockhart Hill, one of the
Abraham Yu (S2) remote assembly (with the help of Batman) Seven Hills of Edinburgh that he linked by bicycle
