The City of Palmerston and the region
The City of Palmerston Local Government Area is located approximately 20km south of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory. The municipality occupies land originally acquired by the Australian Government in 1971 in recogni on of the limited supply of land in the Darwin area to accommodate urban growth. In 1980 development of the then of Palmerston (ini ally known as Darwin East) commenced and in April 1985 the Municipality of Palmerston was created. Palmerston was
declared a city in 2000.
Today, Palmerston is the second largest city in the Northern Territory, the fastest growing centre in the Northern Territory and one of the fastest growing ci es in Australia. Palmerston’s popula on rose from approximately 19,000 to 34,000 between 1999 and 2014 (an increase of around 75 per cent) and has a projected popula on of 42,000 by 20211 .
This Plan has been prepared to ensure adequate community infrastructure is provided to accommodate the municipali es’ future growth.
