Eat Fruit to Hydrate
(DGIwire) — Have you ever noticed feeling refreshed and more hydrated following times when you consumed fruits and vegetables or wonder why this might happen even when you were regularly drinking adequate quantities of pure water?
For a very long period of time during our evolution almost everything we ate contained a very high percentage of water. Fruits, vegetables, eggs and raw animal protein are somewhere between 70% to 96% water. The possible ramifications of this are worth further examination.
A study done at the University of Ab- erdeen Medical School in Scotland found that some fruits and vegetables might hydrate our bodies twice as effectively as a glass of water. This is just one more reason to regularly include more fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
High moisture content fruits and veg- etables contain hydrating salts, minerals, sugars and even protein. They serve as both a meal and a drink. The study found that they are actually more effective at hy- drating than water or even isotonic sports drinks favored by so many athletes today.
Another study from the University of Naples found that certain plant chemi- cals like lutein and zeaxanthin can help increase hydration even more.
Watermelons are 92% water, 8% sugar and contain essential salts calcium, mag- nesium, potassium and sodium along with vitamin C, beta carotene and lycopene. A cucumber is 96% water. Celery is also 96% water and contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc all in a natural and readily ab- sorbable form. Bell peppers are 92% water, yet they’re still rich sources of some of the best nutrients available, including vitamin
C, thiamine, vitamin B6, beta carotene, and folic acid.
“The more similar a fluid is to our own body’s composition the more readily and effectively it will be absorbed into our cells. This is what makes fruits, vegetables and even raw animal proteins like milk, eggs, fish and even meat so effective and bene- ficial. The more you increase your intake
of moisture rich natural foods, the less additional water intake you will need and the healthier you will become,” according to Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel co-authors of TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust.
