Switching Between Programs
Changing from Semi-intensive to GE or EAP
Since Semi-Intensive students do not receive the same amount of classroom
instruction as GE or EAP, they are required to retake the ELS placement test
(listening, speaking, and writing) when changing to either program. Students
changing from Semi-Intensive will be placed into a level based on the results of
their placement test. If you are a Semi-Intensive student and interested in changing
to our GE or EAP program, you will be retested and placed no higher than 108
regardless of what level you are currently in.
Changing from GE to EAP
Since GE students do not receive the same amount of academic preparation and
instruction in Reading and Writing as EAP students, they are required to retake the
ELS placement test (listening, speaking, and writing) when changing to the EAP
program. Students changing from GE will be placed into a level based on the results
of their placement test. If you are a GE student and interested in changing to our
EAP program, you will be retested and placed no higher than 108, regardless of
what level you are currently in.
Changing from EAP to GE or Semi-intensive
Some students at ELS get a conditional letter of acceptance to a university. The
university expects these students to be in the EAP program. Therefore, if you
change from the EAP program, you will not be able to use your ELS certificate as
proof of English proficiency for a college or university. EAP students may change to
GE or Semi-Intensive after any session, but they must sign a Change of Program
form. (If you decide later to change back to EAP, you must retake the placement
test, as explained above, and may not be placed in a level higher than 108.)
