General uses of cotton:
1) Textile.
2) Surgical dressings.
3) Source of pure cellulose.
4) Manufacture of explosive “Nitro-cellulose”.
Cellulose derivatives
Cellulose esters:
Cellulose esters are cellulose derivatives which result by the esterification
of the free hydroxyl groups of the cellulose with one or more acids, whereby
cellulose reacts as a trivalent polymeric alcohol. Cellulose acetate phthalate is the
only cellulose ester used as tablet coating.
Some pharmaceutically important cellulose products.
Name Uses
Purified Cotton surgical dressing; it serves as mechanical
(absorbent cotton) protection to absorb blood, mucus or pus
Powdered used as an anti-caking and bulking gent in food
cellulose/ production, tablet diluents, and disintegrating agent.
Microcrystalline Commonly used in vitamin supplements
cellulose.
Oxidized cellulose local hemostatic (artificial clot)
Nitrated cellulose Pyroxylins is a pharmaceutic aid used in the
(Pyroxylin) preparation of collodion, topical protectants and as a
vehicle for salicylic acid in keratolytic preparations.
Cellulose acetate is the only cellulose ester used as tablet coating.
