How can managers deal with plateaued employees?
» Changing an employee’s responsibilities gives them more (and different) opportunities to develop, avoiding
a plateau. As a manager, one of the most effective ways you can overcome that is by dishing out the right
responsibilities to the right people
» Managers should engage regularly with their direct reports and offer a Professional Development Plan. This will
allow the plateaued employees to think through their career goals and discover other interests and opportunities
» Redefine how they can keep contributing to the organization
» Describe experiences, not just positions. The best companies spend more time sharing the different types of
experiences that employees can have across the company rather than just the positions that are open at the
moment. When managers increase the variety of experiences that workers feel they can have, their perception of
opportunity within the company also increases.
Plateauing is part of a bigger phenomenon in the workforce — one that also includes
people putting higher priorities on activities outside their jobs, from family to
volunteer work to hobbies. For example, in a Families and Work Institute study, the
reason that the majority (67%) of leaders gave for their response was not that they
couldn’t do the work, but that the sacrifices they would have to make in their personal
lives were too great.
