“I give and bequeath to my son LEWIS FOY the seven hundred acres he got from
my son ENOCH for the lease on the East side of Shellings Branch, and a Negroe
by the name of PETER, beds, furniture, horses, cattle, hogs, tools and smiths tools
to him and his heirs foever. Also I lend to my son LEWIS FOY the following
Negroes for his support, as he is a cripple, viz: DICK and ANN, and HANNAH,
and NED, and Negroe FAN, for and during his natural life for his sole support,
and at his death I give the said Negroes I lend to my son LEWIS, to his heirs
lawfully begotten of his body forever.”
ELOUISE determined that LEWIS FOY, who was born and raised in North
Carolina, moved to Georgia in his later adult life.. She found records indicating
LEWIS won a land lottery in 1827. Specifically, according to the state of
Georgia, Lee County 1827 Land Lottery Book QQQQ, page 278, District 6,
LL#50, LEWIS FOY of Beard’s District, Bibb County, Georgia was granted Lot
50, District 6, Lee County, Georgia on December 6, 1837.
Additional information regarding LEWIS and his family appeared illusive and
since there were so many other relatives to be researched we moved on.
ANOTHER LEWIS FOY:
Somewhere along the line, ELOUISE discovered there was a woman living in
Georgia who had been granted membership in the Daughters of the American
Revolution (DAR). In her application for membership this woman listed JAMES
FOY, SR and LEWIS FOY, son of JAMES, as her ancestors.
In this DAR applicant’s description of LEWIS FOY, she listed him as being born
in 1804. Her LEWIS died In Craven County North Carolina in 1853. This did
not agree with the information ELOUISE had learned about our LEWIS. Our
LEWIS FOY was born in 1782. The DAR applicant’s LEWIS FOY never lived
in the State of Georgia; ours did.
The DAR applicant also listed two wives for her LEWIS FOY, i.e. SARAH
(SALLY) EWELL and PATSY McCAFFERTY. That, of course, conflicted with
our information that LEWIS’ wife’s name began with a “B”.
