Lancia had elected not to enter Biasion and should Kankkunen finish in the top two positions of the rally, he would become World Champion. The pressure was on for the young Finn.
The notoriously wet and slippy forest stages of the UK gave Lancia a significant advantage over the competitors, Kankkunen would have a dominant rally, winning 11 stages never relinquishing the lead after leg one.
Kankkunen would take the drivers title, the very first of the Group A era, which would last for nearly 10 years. This win was also the first championship for the Group A Delta. The first of six consecutive manufacturer titles.
