Philippines Takes Part in Annual International Food Festival in New York
The Philippine Consulate General Delegation
headed by Consul General Theresa Dizon-De Vega offered
Pancit Bam-I and ube and pandan sweet rolls. Ms. Kay
Habana, a New York-based Filipino soprano and events
caterer performed the Philippine classic “Ang Maya” to the
delight of the international audience.
During the event, Consul General De Vega was
likewise interviewed by the popular program “Dining with
Diplomats” where she spoke about the growing popularity of
Philippine cuisine.

An annual winter event, the Food Festival attracts
over 500 visitors from the diplomatic and consular corps,
business sector, media, culinary and travel industries in the
city.
Over 30 countries participated in the event presenting L-R Floresita Cuabo, Vice Consul Khrystina Corpuz-Popov, Ms. Kay Habana,
a savory and sweet sample of their respective cuisines and Consul General Theresa De Vega, Ms. Amina of the Saudi Arabian Consulate,
spirits as part of the exclusive tasting set-up. While guests Cultural Officer Olive Magpile
enjoyed the food offerings, nine countries, including the
Philippines, likewise took part in the event’s Cultural Night.
Philippines Headlines Cultural Show in Ellis Island New York
In celebration of Asian-American Heritage Month, the National Park Service, in cooperation with the Nai-Ni Chen
Dance Company presented the Ellis Island Asian American Heritage Festival on 6 May 2018 at the Great Hall of Immigration at
Ellis Island.
Filipino cultural group Kinding Sindaw Heritage Foundation headlined the show, with a 15-minute dance interpretation
of an exceprt from the Meranao epic Derangen. Derangen was proclaimed by the UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage
of Humanity in 2005. Darangen encodes
customary law, standards of social and
ethical behavior, notions of aesthetic beauty,
and social values specific to the Meranao
people of Mindanao Southern Philippines.
This epic dates back to the 4th to 10th
century.
Five other groups from China,
Vietnam, India and Hawaii performed their
traditional and indigenous dances and music.
