Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Contractors engaged in direct care services are expected to provide evidence of infection control training and must follow standard precautions at all times.
Contractors must also supply and use their own PPE.
Gloves must be used when:
• Handling and disposing sharp
instruments and clinical waste (follow all instructions on packages regarding disposal).
Masks may be worn during domestic services (when using Approved Domestic Products or chemicals).
Masks may also be required from time to time for infection control purposes and/or during pandemics (e.g. COVID-19).
First Aid
Contractors providing any form of direct care services should have a First Aid kit accessible at all times and should maintain current CPR and First Aid qualifications.
In emergency situations requiring first aid, you should always refer to the training undertaken and act in accordance with your First Aid training procedures.
• In direct contact with body fluids, secretions and excretions such as blood (including dried blood), faeces, urine, saliva, mucous and non-intact skin.
• Cleaning a toilet.
• Using any cleaners or chemicals that
advise the use of gloves.
• Handling food and meal preparation.
• Providing wound care.
Gloves must be changed after the completion of each task.
Disposable aprons may be worn during personal care. Aprons are to be used once, and then disposed of appropriately.
