The communication
dilemma
To call him a GOAT is a bit extra but just remember if you spill tea by likening your bae to a n00b, then your bruh is likely to get salty.
Ah, the generation gap. It's difficult enough to navigate at the best of times but none more so than when you’re trying to communicate with the teenagersinyourlifeandyoucan’t understand what they're saying.
For almost as long as humans have traversed the earth, generations of teens and pre-teens have developed languages of their own to communicate with one another.
Typically these have been based on influences in teen culture. Now, however, the introduction of social media sites such as Tik Tok and the relative ease of digital communication means the slang they're using is evolving at a rapid pace.
Acquainting yourself with these words and terms can in itself be an exercise in futility. But before wasting money hiring a tween interpreter
or losing hours consulting an online dictionary, familiarise yourself with the terms below to help you get
one step ahead when it comes to conversing with your much younger loved ones.
G.O.A.T
No longer just a word used to describe an agile hollow-horned bovid animal, the modern interpretation of GOAT stands for
the Greatest Of All Time where it is most commonly used to describe exceptional athletes, musicians or other high profile public figures. E.g: “Eminem is the GOAT.”
Woke
Used as a past tense of wake, the term woke in modern slang now means to be culturally or spiritually enlightened. E.g: “He has a habit of saying discriminatory things and it’s about time he got woke.”
Hundo P
Short for 100 per cent. E.g: “Want to go to the beach later?” “Hundo P.”
Yeet
While it sounds like part of the word has not yet made its way
out of the speaker’s mouth,
yeet in its modern context is typically an exclamation of surprise or all-round energy, often used when doing a dance move or throwing something. E.g: “Mr Anderson got angry that I was drawing in class so he yeeted
my notebook in the bin.”
Skrrt
An onomatopoeia for the sound of a car drifting or wheels screeching,
skrrt typically means to get away from something or someone. Try, “Did you see me drift on that road? I was like skrrt boi!”
Spillingthetea
In short: to tell the truth about something juicy. E.g: “I saw Ryan was upset, start spilling the tea, honey.”
OK, boomer
Often used in a humorous or ironic manner, this term is used to dismiss out-of-touch or close-minded opinions associated with baby boomers and older people generally. E.g: “OK, boomer. Just keeping thinking your irrelevant thoughts.”
Karen (or sometimes Linda)
A mocking slang term for an entitled, irritable middle-aged white woman. She may also have a bob haircut. E.g: “She always asks to ‘talk to the manager’, she’s a real Karen.”
N00b
Commonly used in internet slang, a noob suggests someone who is new to the game, concept or idea. To be referred to as a n00b (as opposed
to a Noob) is the ultimate indignity.
E.g: “I was such a n00b at the game when I first began to play.”
