Chapter 5
Reading Ingredients
Introduction
If you’ve had food allergies for most of your life, reading ingredients probably seems like second nature to you. You flip the package over, read the list, and pay extra attention to any wording that highlights the allergens inside. Then you double-check the package for anything you may have missed. You may be so good at it that you can pick out an allergen within just a couple of seconds. Sometimes it might seem like a hassle to have to read every label (such as when a friend bakes you something and you have to go digging through the garbage to find the wrapper). But, trust us, it’s worth it. Then there are also the precautionary warnings saying “may contain” or “made in a facility that also processes...” (or some other variation of the phrase). It is strongly recommended that you do not eat any foods with these warnings.
