Page 90 - The Ultimate Guidebook for Teens with Food Allergies
P. 90
When bullying or teasing happens, we’re often left wondering—why do people bully? It’s one of those things about human nature that is very difficult to understand. Unfortunately, it does exist and we need to know how to respond to it so it doesn’t get under our skin and affect us.
Although bullying may seem more common in elementary school, it can continue on into the teen years. You would think that people would know better by that age. Bullies can, however, be found in high schools, on sport teams, or even in the workplace. The important thing is to take notice when someone gives you unwanted attention. Use your voice and try to help them understand that what they’re trying to achieve is hurtful and dangerous. Don’t be afraid to get an adult involved if the situation escalates. Remember that allergies are not your fault and that you don’t need to feel ashamed of them. Be confident about the fact that you have done nothing wrong and that you cannot, and should not, be the target of bullying.
