Chapter 15
Educating Others
Introduction
Building a network of people who understand your allergies, and who know how to help you, is one of the most beneficial things you can do as a teen with food allergies. As a child, your parents or other responsible adults are often there to help you out in tricky situations, warn you about potential allergens or ensure you are taken care of if you have a reaction. As a teen, you will find yourself more and more independent. But this does not mean you should have to deal with everything allergy-related on your own.
Educating others is incredibly useful. People who understand your allergies can help you out in a wide variety of situations. Whether you are having a severe reaction, having to deal with someone who doesn’t “get it,” or trying to figure out what restaurant to go to, it is always nice to have people to help you out and have your back.
