A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE SECOND DALAI LAMA
TIBET, 17TH CENTURY
Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with beaded rims, his
right hand raised in vitarkamudra and his left holding a manuscript
in his lap, dressed in voluminous patchwork robes with hems
incised in a foral pattern, the face with smiling mouth fanked by
prominent ears, the base sealed and incised with a double-vajra

The 2nd Dalai Lama, Gendun Gyatso (1475-1542),
was recognized early on as the 1st Dalai Lama’s
reincarnation. Very studious, he was known to be
particularly modest and virtuous.
