SIGNED MA SHAOXIAN, DATED JIHAI (1899) Robert Kleiner, London, 2012.
The bottle is decorated on each side with a scene from The Ruth and Carl Barron Collection, Belmont, Massachusetts,
Romance of the Three Kingdoms and an inscription, one of which no. 5305.
describes the scene depicted, the other one incorporates a cyclical
date, jihai, followed by the artist’s signature, Ma Shaoxian, and the 己亥年(1899) 馬紹先作玻璃内畫三國演義人物故事圖鼻煙壺
artist’s seal.

A GREEN-AND-PINK-OVERLAY WHITE GLASS SNUFF
BOTTLE
1780-1860
The bottle is carved through the semi-transparent blackish-
green and opaque pink overlays to the opaque white ground with
groupings of antiques and scholar’s objects.
