          A RARE BLUE AND WHITE MONTEITH                      This rare form emulates English silver examples that were fashionable
          KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)                           between about 1680 and 1720, their distinctive rims made to hold
          The notched rim above cartouches of beasts and birds reserved on a   wine glass bases so their bowls could cool in ice. The bowls were
          ground of dense scrolling foliage, the interior with auspicious antiques   named after an eccentric Scot, Lord Monteith, who wore his cloak
          below Buddhist emblems, the base with a blue fower mark  hem notched in this fashion.

          The VOC (Verenigde Oostindische  Compagnie
          or Dutch East India Co.) was key to the
          prosperity of the Dutch Golden Age.
          Dishes such as this were made for the use of
          Company offcials at their outpost in Batavia
