Part of an interesting group of fve services,
apparently ordered on the occasion of King
Charles IV’s accession to the Spanish throne
in 1788. The decoration here is after a medal
struck as the prize for a literary contest at
the Royal University of Mexico to celebrate
the occasion.

Enameled with a central medallion,
inscription ‘EN SU EXALTACION AL
TRONO LA CIUDAD DE MEXICO’ and
dated ‘EN 27 DE DICIEMBRE DE 1789’,
after a medal in the series made to celebrate
the 1788 proclamation of Charles IV as
King of Spain.
