                                                             A CARVED CHENXIANGMU ‘JIAO SUI’ CUP
                                                             17th/18th century
                                                             Carved in high relief around the exterior with a scene depicting two
                                                             of the ‘Eight Drunken Immortals’ and an attendant in a mountainous
                                                             landscape, the rich brown wood with smooth patina, inscribed on the
                                                             body with a line of a seven-character poem.

                                                             十七/十八世紀 沉香木雕飲中八仙焦遂飲酒杯
                                                             Libation cups carved from chenxiangmu generally resemble rhinoceros
                                                             horn cups in appearance, compare with a related late Ming dynasty
                                                             chenxiangmu carved ‘landscape’ brushpot inscribed by Jiangchunbo
                                                             in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection
                                                             of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood Ivory and
                                                             Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p.21, no.20; see also
                                                             a 18th century chenxiangmu ‘Drunken Eight Immortals’ cup, sold at
                                                             Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 22 April 2021, lot 3659.

                                                             侈口翻唇,口沿下陰刻弦紋一周,杯身下收,深浮雕山林樹木及山
                                                             石,柳樹之下圓雕二高士對酌,石台之上杯盞儼然,高士身後蹲踞一
                                                             小童,面前高低三缸酒壺,山石雕琢立體深峻,線條圓潤,杯身留白
                                                             處陰刻詩句「焦遂五斗方卓然」。
                                                             所刻詩句出自唐代杜甫《飲中八仙歌》:「焦遂五斗方卓然,高談雄
                                                             辯驚四筵。」此詩大約是天寶五年(746年)杜甫初到長安時所作。
                                                             史稱李白與賀知章、李適之、李璡、崔宗之、蘇晉、張旭、焦遂八人
                                                             俱善飲,稱 「酒中八仙人」,為長安一時佳話。
                                                             參考北京故宮藏一件明代晚期江春波製沉香木雕山水圖筆筒,其山水
                                                             人物佈局及刀工與本件頗為相似,見《故宮博物院藏文物珍品大系》,
                                                             香港,2002年,頁21, 編號20。另可比較一對十八世紀沉香木雕飲
                                                             中八仙詩意圖杯,2021年4月22日售於香港蘇富比,拍品編號3659。

                                                             A PAIR OF COCONUT BOWLS
                                                             19th century
                                                             Each carved standing on a short straight foot with six shou characters
                                                             in roundels divided by the eight auspicious emblems, each bowl
                                                             carved with a different set of symbols, all against a diapered ground,
                                                             set with silver liners, engraved with a zuwen mark on the interior.

                                                             十九世紀 椰殼雕暗八仙包銀碗一對
                                                             The present pair of wine bowls was possibly used for kumis or
                                                             chhaang, compare with a mid Qing dynasty carved coconut shell
                                                             ‘cloud and dragon’ bowl in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated
                                                             in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum:
                                                             Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong,
                                                             2002, p.97.

                                                             椰殼為材,碗外壁減地浮雕雕八仙法寶六種,有書卷、芭蕉扇、犀
                                                             角、銅錢、葫蘆及拍板,以浮雕團壽字隔開,網格紋填地,圈足,底
                                                             部內收兩層,碗內壁包銀,碗心鏨「足紋」銀標。
                                                             此碗或為蒙古族藏族酒具,馬奶酒或青稞酒當用之。可比較北京故宮
                                                             博物院藏一件清中期椰殼雕雲龍紋碗,見李久芳編,《故宮博物院藏
                                                             文物珍品全集》,香港,2002年,頁97。
