Most well-known for his long and innovative career as a painter of
landscapes and flowers, Huang Binhong was also a prominent expert
in early calligraphic scripts and the evolution of the written language.
This poetic couplet employs the large seal script found on bronze
objects dating from the Zhou dynasties (1100-256 BCE), prior to the
linguistic reforms made during the reign of the first emperor of the Qin
dynasty. The lines and thickness of each brushstroke are even and
uniform, with the text repeated on the margin of the right scroll.
