                           A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA          The present fgure of Buddha Shakyamuni,
                           SHAKYAMUNI                         depicted in bhumisparshamudra with hair in tight
                           THAILAND, LOPBURI PERIOD           curls and topped with a conical ushnisha, is an
                           13TH CENTURY
                                                              amalgamated  style  that  emerged  around  the
                           8º in. (21 cm.) high
                                                              ancient city of Lopburi, which was occupied by
                           $20,000-30,000                     the Khmer empire in the twelfth century. The
                                                              pronounced physique in the present fgure display
                                                              the the infuences of Khmer imagery of the Angkor
                           PROVENANCE
                           Collection of Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price, Texas,   period, while the earlier local Dvaravati infuence
                           acquired before 14 October 1993    can  be  seen  in  the  the  wide  face,  pendulous
                           Christie’s New York, 18 September 2013, lot 396  earlobes, and conical chignon.
