A FINELY CARVED ZITAN
SCREEN BASE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The central panel is carved with a lotus
blossom with trailing, leafy tendrils, above
openwork aprons carved as archaistic scroll
interspersed with simplified ruyi heads
centred by small florets. The whole is raised
on thick zitan feet flanked by standing
openwork spandrels carved as archaistic
scroll and vertical posts terminating in
scroll-form ends; together with a zitan screen
frame of later date.
The base: 23 in. (56.7 cm.) high, 25Æ in.
(65.4 cm.) wide, 12Õ/”ÿ in. (31.3 cm.) deep
