A PALE GREEN AND RUSSET JADE CARVING
OF A MYTHICAL BEAST
Yuan/Ming Dynasty
Finely carved as a recumbent mythical beast facing
forward, the face rendered with elongated eyes,
its head flanked by pointed ears enclosing curling
horns, the spine extending to the incised bushy tail,
the stone of pale green tone with scattered cloudy
and russet inclusions, box.

A WHITE JADE CARVING OF A RAM AND
YOUNG
Ming Dynasty
The larger ram deftly carved with two long horns
curling towards the back, the face with almond-
shaped eyes and finely incised beard, the legs
tucked neatly underneath the rounded body, beside
it lays a small lamb in similar position, the stone of
pale white tone with some russet inclusions, wood
stand and fitted box.

The image of the sheep or ram, yang (羊), appeared
as early as the Han dynasty as a pun for xiang (祥),
meaning auspicious or lucky. This association of the
sheep has evolved, becoming heavily associated
with yang (陽), meaning the sun, and the warm,
positive or masculine force in Chinese cosmology.

group, Song/Ming dynasty, which was sold at
Bonhams Hong Kong, 27 November 2018, lot 103.
