ANONYMOUS The theme of ‘boys at play’ emerged as an offshoot of the ‘one
Ladies and Boys, 17th/18th century hundred boys’ design. Paintings attributed to the Qing dynasty
Ink and colour on silk depicting ladies and children on a terrace, depicting similar scenes of boys at play include an album, ‘Children
framed. at Play’, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete
112cm (44in) long x 204cm (80 1/4in) wide. Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Genre Paintings of the
Ming and Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2008, pl.57, together with a
£5,000 - 8,000 hanging scroll, ‘Children Watching Their Images Reflected in the Water
CNY39,000 - 63,000 Basin’, by Ding Guanpeng, ibid., pl.56. Compare with a large painting
of ladies and boys, 18th/19th century, which was sold at Christie’s
London, 18 May 2012, lot 1085. See also a large ‘hundred boys’
