PROVENANCE

An American private collection, acquired circa 2010

The combination of a boy and a cat forms the pun maodie, which
conveys the auspicious message of ‘May you live into your seventies
and eighties’. Hence the motif on the current jade carving deliver the
well-intended wish of longevity and good health.

Compare another carving of a boy and cat group dated to the Ming
dynasty in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Jade, Ming Dynasty
– The Complete Collections in the Palace Museum, vol. 6, Beijing, 2011,
pl. 285; and another nearly identical carving sold at Sotheby’s Hong
Kong, 1 December 2016, lot 15.
