Mr. Floyd Ohliger
Floyd Ohliger (1902–1993) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and educated
at the University of Pittsburg and Stanford University. He rose to prominence as
one of the top American oil executives stationed in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Ohliger
was a pioneer of America’s oil business in the gulf, arriving there in 1934, and
for decades utilized his expert knowledge of Saudi politics and culture to guide
the development of the region’s oil industry. One of Ohliger’s primary functions
was to serve as a direct representative to the King, and his close friendships
with successive Saudi sovereigns, their heirs and members of the court proved
to be an extremely valuable asset to his employers. Apart from his professional
success, Mr. Ohliger was a passionate collector of Chinese snuff bottles, making
many of his purchases in Hong Kong in the 1940s and 1950s. Later, he was an
active member of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, hosting society
events at his home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and exhibiting his collection
at the 1979 Philadelphia Convention.
